Three major color for this web design, grey, green and white. For me, websites is like boxiest and majority navigation, content part design is same, just left or right, top and bottom. This websites actually is same theories also, just they dint draw out the grid system line or either navigation bar. Websites is just fit enough, no need to drag down see content or images. Color is contrast and yet we can read content.

Ur research are interesting but i thinking how u actually connected them to ur zoo website? Anyway i found e-fact is good refrence for u, zoo is a place with full of many species animal and most of it is living with natural. Colour that represent Natural, always is the green. i thinking ur website mayeb can apply all thing in green with simplicity background. Or add some green motion graphic to lively the zoo.
